12 December 2023
St Mary's church representatives, members of the Parish Council, Wingham Primary School children and staff and residents of Wingham were delighted to host a visit on Tuesday 12 December from His Excellency Juan Carlos Gamarra Skeels, Ambassador of Peru, Embassy of Peru in London, to pay respects and lay a wreath before the plaque of General William Miller inside the Church. This is the third visit His Excellency has made to Wingham and St Mary's Church to honour General Miller. The first visit to Wingham by the Embassy of Peru was made for the unveiling ceremony of General Miller's memorial plaque on 9 February 2007.
Accompanying the Ambassador were distinguished officers of the army and the Peruvian police. Wingham Primary School children welcomed our visitors with an excellent ‘Welcome to Wingham’ banner. Following a short ceremony, where the Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Sharon Addis, read out a welcome to our guests, Churchwarden Steve Sheath shared a prayer and His Excellency shared information about General Miller, Embassy officers gave out gifts, including woolly hats for the children and staff, photos were taken and then the Ambassador visited Wingham Primary School to tell the children more about General Miller.
