The A257 Traffic Group is urging KCC Highways to act and introduce road safety improvements on the A257 between the Sandwich roundabout and Gobery Hill, Wingham.

The A257 Traffic Group comprises members of Parish Councils and Associations along the A257 plus District & County Councillors and MPs.

In the e-petition which opens today, Tuesday 19 May, and runs until Wednesday 19th August, the Group calls for a 50mph speed limit on the Ash bypass; a 40mph speed limit in the hamlet of Shatterling; central double white lines on the Roman Road and enforcement of the speed limits to improve safety for everyone living, working, walking, cycling, riding and driving on this road.

Too many people have been killed or seriously injured on this stretch of road. Since 2019 there have been 3 fatal collisions plus at least 30 serious or slight recorded incidents with many more unrecorded incidents occurring daily. Drivers go too fast and carry out dangerous overtaking manoeuvres with devastating consequences and pedestrians have been knocked off their feet from the suction caused by vehicles passing too close. This is unacceptable.

A257 Traffic Group Chairman, Bryan Curtis said, “It is time for KCC Highways to act on what residents, businesses, parish councils and users of this stretch of road have been requesting for years - to make changes that will improve road safety for everyone. We have the backing of our MP, Sir Roger Gale, and our Kent Police Neighbourhood Beat Officer and so I urge everyone to sign this petition.”

The petition is open to the public and can be found on the Group’s webpage: https://wingham-pc.gov.uk/the-a257-traffic-group/ or via the KCC e-petition portal: https://democracy.kent.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?ID=567&RPID=316529147&HPID=316529147
